Allium flower bulbs or ornamental onion
Allium flower bulbs, also known as ornamental onions, create a beautiful plant. They are available in white, lilac, purple, blue, yellow, violet, and pink. These lovely shades look great in any garden. It's also a bonus that the allium has a very long blooming period. It can bloom for up to a month, a huge advantage of allium flower bulbs. Just likecrocuses, daffodilsandtulipsPlant your bulbs in the fall. They won't bloom until most spring plants have finished blooming, typically mid-May to June. Have you ever heard of a "flowering hole"? We mean that bare, dull spot in your garden because the spring bloomers have finished blooming and the summer ones are still developing. With allium bulbs, this is now a thing of the past. What a winner!
Allium flower bulbs
With their beautiful slender leaves and spherical flowers, allium bulbs are a winner in any garden. They combine beautifully with other plants and are perfect for creating a bouquet and bringing them indoors. This practice was already practiced in the past, but not for decorative purposes. Bunches of allium bulbs were hung to ward off bad luck. In Germany, they're still called "Allermannsharnisch" (armor for everyone). This graceful guardian angel shouldn't be missing from your garden, right?
Plants of the allium
The most well-known allium bulbs are the edible varieties, such as onions, garlic, and chives. Allium means "garlic" in Latin. As soon as the bulb, stems, or leaves are damaged, an onion-like aroma is released. Plant allium bulbs between mid-October and mid-December in full sun, preferably in chalky soil to develop strong roots. Plant them three times as deep as the bulb's height. For allium bulbs measuring 4 centimeters, plant them 12 centimeters deep.
Larger and smaller species
There's a significant difference in height between the various varieties, ranging from a plant just 5 centimeters tall to as tall as 2 meters! They look perfect planted freely in a neglected garden, but the same goes for grouped allium bulbs in the border. The smaller varieties also thrive in pots and containers, or in a rock garden.
