Gladioli flower bulbs bring strength and pride
Gladioli bulbs produce fantastic flowers in every color of the rainbow. The flower is famous for the Nijmegen Four Days Marches; it's a gift for the walkers who arrive exhausted but satisfied by the spectators. It's no wonder they chose this flower for this occasion, as the gladioli symbolizes strength, victory, and pride. This meaning dates all the way back to Roman times, when gladiators in the arena literally fought to the death or the gladioli. If a gladiator won, they were showered with gladioli. Hence the expression "death or the gladioli."
Beloved cut flowers
The flowers that grow from gladioli bulbs are very popular as cut flowers, and if you plant them liberally in your garden, you can pick plenty of them in summer. Plant the bulbs in April or May, after the last frost, in a sunny, warm, sheltered spot in calcareous, well-drained soil. The corms cannot tolerate standing water and require plenty of nutrients. Plant the corms of taller varieties deeper for a firmer base. Be sure to support them so they don't blow over in the wind. Once the gladioli bulbs have reached their full potential, they are fantastic for bouquets because they offer such wonderful height variations. The gladioli makes a grand statement in the vase, towering over everything. With flowers arranged on either side of the stem, we are doubly spoiled. From pure white to mysterious purple. From bright yellow to fire engine red. This flower is a real eye-catcher in any bouquet!
