Agapanthus bulbs from South Africa
The Agapanthus originates from South Africa, hence its nickname "African lily," where it grows in rocky grasslands. You can still find them growing wild there, just like on the Canary Islands and Madeira. Fortunately, the Agapanthus is well-suited to the Dutch maritime climate, and we can enjoy this beautiful flower here too. It grows from rhizomes with at least one healthy node from which the plant emerges. The yield isn't very impressive the first year, but the Agapanthus bulbs will certainly make up for it next season. Plant it in spring about 3 centimeters deep in a sunny spot.
Long leaves and beautiful flowers
For good flowering and growth with fresh long leaves and beautiful trumpet-shaped flowers, plant the agapanthus bulbs in sandy, humus-rich soil.
The long stems also make the flower perfect as a cut flower, for example, in a stylish birth bouquet. Of course, give the agapanthus a sunny spot, partly to prevent the lily from drawing too much sun in a less sunny spot.
Agapanthus bulbs evergreen and deciduous
Agapanthus bulbs come in evergreen and deciduous varieties. The evergreen variety isn't winter-hardy, meaning your love will be short-lived. Bring them indoors when it freezes; they thrive in a conservatory or greenhouse, or else in a cool, unheated, but frost-free spot indoors. Deciduous varieties are winter-hardy; they need the cold period to develop new flower buds. This plant's beauty and uniqueness are evident in its continued use as a medicinal plant by traditional folklore. It's used for fertility, heart conditions, and colds. Did you participate in the Four Days Marches? This plant offers a solution then too: it's said to be a miracle cure for tired feet. Wrap them in agapanthus leaves for half an hour, and you'll be skipping along again!
Flower of love
Yes, the "Flower of Love" is truly the translation of the name agapanthus. In Greek, "agape" means love and "anthos" means flower. We think the flower truly deserves this name, because what a beauty it is, truly to fall in love with! These flowers are often used in bridal bouquets for good reason. In South Africa, the flowers also symbolize love. Some tribes dry the roots and wear them around their necks during a wedding. The apaganthus bulbs, from which beautiful blue or white funnel-shaped flowers emerge, are therefore truly special!
