Why you want Dahlie Penhill watermelon in your garden
Dahlia 'Penhill Watermelon' – dinner plate in pink and apricot
Dahlia 'Penhill Watermelon' is probably the largest dahlia flower I've ever had in my garden. This dinnerplate dahlia has flowers 25 to 28 cm across. Its slightly curled petals display a vibrant array of pink, apricot, lavender, and a hint of yellow. This makes it a lovely addition to many other dahlias.
Flowering and growth
Dahlia 'Penhill Watermelon' is a Dinnerplate dahlia and blooms all summer long until the first frost. The plants grow to about 100cm tall and produce an abundance of flowers, carried by sturdy stems. However, some extra support is helpful, simply because the flowers are so large and heavy. The more often you prune them, the more abundantly they will bloom with new buds.
Location and care
Plant the tubers after the last frost in loose, fertile soil. Place them in a sunny spot where they get plenty of light. During dry weeks, provide extra water to ensure the large flowers develop well. Cutting back spent flowers extends the flowering period. In winter, you can dig up the tubers and store them frost-free, or protect them with a thick layer of mulch.
Why choose Dahlia 'Penhill Watermelon'?
Its enormous flowers, combined with the warm, changing colour palette, make it a variety that will attract attention all summer long.
Combination tip
I love combining it with the airy, warm yellow flowers of Dahlia Bishop of York, or with the small, warm yellow pom-poms of Dahlia Buttercup.
