Dahlia 'Penhill Dark Monarch' is one of our favorite large-flowered dahlia varieties, earning this honored spot thanks to its graceful, slightly curled petals and beautiful, varied color palette. Its enormous flowers, sometimes up to 25 cm wide, feature a unique color gradient: raspberry pink and plum purple with a soft apricot base. It's as if each flower has been painted with a brush.
Flowering and growth
Dahlia 'Penhill Dark Monarch' belongs to the Dinnerplate dahlia family and blooms profusely from summer until the first frost. The slightly curled petals give the flowers a playful effect, while their 25cm size ensures they always stand out. The plants grow to about 120cm tall and produce long, sturdy stems that are perfect for cutting. The more often you cut them, the more new buds will appear.
Location and care
Plant the tubers after the last frost in loose, fertile, well-draining soil. A sunny location ensures the best flowering. Because of their large flowers, supporting them with stakes or a trellis can be helpful. Provide extra water during dry spells and cut away faded flowers to prolong flowering. In winter, you can dig up the tubers and store them in a frost-free place, or protect them with a thick layer of mulch.

When combining dahlias, I always recommend taking advantage of the many different flower shapes. In terms of color, you can choose what you like best. I think a combination of the soft salmon-apricot color and perfectly round flowers of Dahlia Linda's Baby is very beautiful.
