Dahlia 'Night Silence' – deep berry tones with dark leaves
Dahlia 'Night Silence' is a mysterious surprise in the garden; the dark leaves and large flower buds always make me wonder what's growing there. When the 12cm diameter flowers open, they reveal a magical array of deep mauve and raspberry red with an almost black center. The dark, purplish-brown leaves provide the perfect contrast and give the plant character even after flowering.
Flowering and growth
Dahlia 'Night Silence' blooms profusely and for a long time, from summer until the first frost. At about 100 cm tall, it stays compact enough for a border or a large pot, but its sturdy stems also make it suitable as a cut flower. The more often you cut flowers, the more new buds the plant produces. The unique color gradient makes each flower look slightly different: from deep berry tones to a softer, powdery tone as the flower ages.
Location and care
After the last frost, plant the tubers in full sun or light shade. They grow best in loose, fertile, well-draining soil. During dry spells, they appreciate some extra water. Remove spent flowers to prolong flowering and encourage new buds to develop. In winter, you can dig up the tubers and store them in a frost-free place, or protect them with mulch if the winter is mild.
